Cesar Chavez chose the black and red colors. The UFW symbol of the eagle was designed by Richard Chavez. On the flag below, a message above the eagle symbol reads, "Viva la cusa" which means "Long live our cause." On the slanted sign, the message reads "¡No nos vamos! que hablen con nuestros representativos". The sign below the top flag contains a message written in Spanish: "No nos vamos/ni nos dejamos".
